Why are some people absolutely obsessed with cultures that aren't their own?
Am I the only one that is annoyed with that?
I like other cultures but there is a fine line with admiring one and trying to be apart of that group.
I have met Caucasians that wanted to be Asian and when I told them I was of Asian descent they would get real mean! Its not like I was bragging. Then I would get " You're still just Black" and I know I'm Black I never said I wasnt.
I had a friend that wanted to be Black so badly it was weird. She would go out of her way to do everything that was black. I was flattered though because she loved my hair.
And this same friend of mine would lie and tell people she was Mexican. I knew her family and they would all say she lies.
Has anyone else seen people totally obsessed with a culture not their own. Obsession and admiring are two different things.
Obsessed With Other Cultures?
Obsession is quite scary to me. Please understand the obsession is when one CANNOT stop thinking/talking about a subject.
What you describe is just bizarre. Adopting another culture's behaviors is not weird, but to lie about ones heritage or make outrageous claims is!
Obsessed With Other Cultures?
I know some Black people who are obsessed with being Korean.
Yeah it is annoying. You're not the only one.
Edit:
Hmmm...did I hit too close to home? Notice I didn't say any names I said SOME Black people. At no time did I mention you.

It's okay if they are totally into a different culture. It gives them a new perspective on another persons life. I personally love the Italian and Japanese culture. I'm of Italian descent but not japanese. When u like a certain culture, u feel like u know enough about their culture that u wish to become one. I think that is a major compliment toward any country to which one is fascinated by.

Happy New Year, California Girl! Just be yourself. Stay true to yourself. (I am also part Asian and some individuals use this as an opportunity to say whatever they want to say about Asians) :)
Obsessed With Other Cultures?
i wouldn't exactly call it an obsession but i do lean in that direction, i'm a writer and it pays to have as much information as i can get on a subject and i mean first-hand information and not stereotypes. in my day i've seen all kinds of sickness and obessions of all kinds so that would come as no shock but aside from my own research i've never seem someone focus on another culture in that way

Back in High School!
Peace!
Obsessed With Other Cultures?
Yeah... I know what you mean, but it doesn't annoy me. At least those people are trying take interest in something other than themselves. I'm a Nigerian-American girl who is into Korean culture and guys) by the way. I do it to learn about the similarities between that culture and my own.
Hey, do you know that Koreans have a really nice hip hop and R%26amp;B scene? If you don't believe me, just check out artists like Rain, Wheesung, Crown J, and Hyori. I guess they're trying to be "Black" huh? (just like Justin Timberlake) lol
We are all on this planet together, so it would be nice if people stepped outside their little self-righteous bubbles and comfort zones to learn about other cultures. You know what I mean?
Obsessed With Other Cultures?
I know some Mexican people who insist they are Spanish, as in the country of Spain. Everybody knows its a lie, but so what, its what they wish to be. I am a great admirer of Mexico and could never be mistaken for Mexican...I am a pinky bean, pink on the outside brown on the inside.
Obsessed With Other Cultures?
it's seems more like self-hate to me. Yes i have known those people that lie about their race/ethnicity, but there's no use for that. If they like that culture so much they should learn about it and have friends of that culture. There's no need to pretend to be someone they are not.
Obsessed With Other Cultures?
It sounds like folks are too hung up on culture altogether.
And this is very close to something called segregation.
What do you mean by culture exactly? What is specific to your culture and off limits to other people? And if you want it to remain off limits then why bring it to a place of mixed peoples?
As far as Asians are concerned, what makes up a lot of Asian culture is customs. I have a few Asian friends whose parents (grandparents, etc) are VERY particular about observing their customs when in their house and especially in their country (which I haven't been to but would love to travel to someday). Is it wrong for me to honor them? If I give great reverence to my ancestors and elders am I a wannabe Asian?
As an honest question. Where is the line drawn?
Now, of course, I could never be a respected Asian bloodline and I would never do anything stupid like sueing an Asian family to ackowledge my bloodline as equal to theirs.
Sueing over equality in a culture...who would do that?
